The Pheasant Lodge is in Field Broughton, a small countryside hamlet near Cartmel in Cumbria. Just two miles from Cartmel village and a few miles from the southern tip of Windermere. Our holiday home is well placed for exploring the Lake District, with local walks, restaurants and days by the water within easy reach.
Come for a meal at L’Enclume, a day at Cartmel Races or a holiday discovering the lakes and fells. You can spend your days exploring, then return to a quiet evening in the garden or by the log fire.

Cartmel: food, history and race days
Just two miles from The Pheasant Lodge, Cartmel is a lovely place to spend a morning exploring independent shops, visiting Cartmel Priory and stopping for coffee. Pick up some famous Cartmel Sticky Toffee Pudding, browse the food and drink shops around Unsworth’s Yard, or enjoy lunch in one of the village pubs. You can’t go wrong at the Cavendish.
For a special occasion, book a meal at Simon Rogan’s L’Enclume or Rogan & Co. Cartmel Racecourse is another highlight, with summer race days bringing picnics, crowds and a lively atmosphere to the village. Stay nearby at the Lodge and return to peaceful surroundings after a day out.

Walks near The Pheasant Lodge
You don’t have to travel far for a lovely walk. Hampsfell is a local favourite, with open fell paths, views over Morecambe Bay and a stone hospice at the summit. For views across Windermere, head to Gummer’s How. A short uphill walk takes you above the southern end of the lake.
High Dam, near Finsthwaite, is another walk we love, with woodland paths leading to a peaceful tarn. These are good options for exploring close to the Lodge, whether you fancy a morning on the hills or a walk with a picnic stop.

Windermere, lake cruises and steam trains
The southern tip of Windermere is just a few miles from The Pheasant Lodge. Head to Fell Foot for a picnic, a paddle or time by the water, with lawns to relax on and lovely views across the lake.
At nearby Lakeside, beside Lakeside Hotel, you can board a Windermere Lake Cruise to Bowness and explore more of the lake by boat. For a day out combining two journeys, take the steam train on the Lakeside & Haverthwaite Railway and continue onto the water from Lakeside Pier.

Grange-over-Sands, 4 miles
A quiet seaside retreat on the shores of Morecambe Bay. There are a range of small shops and supermarkets and some great cafes. We particularly love the walk along the promenade where you’ll find cafés and small parks along the coastline.
Fell Foot, 4 miles – Lake Windermere
Situated at the south of Lake Windermere, close to Newby Bridge, Fell Foot is a beautiful place to enjoy wild swimming, water sports activities or just relaxing by the lake. We often picnic here but there is also a café which has a range of hot and cold food, a pizza van and a delicious ice cream shop.
