If you ask us where to eat in Cartmel, the Cavendish Arms is always one of the first places we mention – and that’s saying something in a village like this.

Set just a few doors down from L’Enclume, the Cavendish sits close to the village square and somehow manages to feel both wonderfully traditional and quietly impressive at the same time. It’s the sort of place we pop into ‘just for a drink’ and end up staying for snacks… and maybe pudding too.
The Cavendish Arms Cartmel: A Proper Pub with Food Worth Talking About
Walk through the door and you’re greeted by everything you want from a classic English pub. Low ceilings, stone floors, old beams dressed with hops, a roaring fire in winter and an instantly warm, welcoming feel. There’s a lovely little window seat we always seem to nab, and the whole place just feels cosy in the best way.

One side leans more towards dining, while the other still very much feels like a pub. Our favourite side. People are perched at the bar, drinks in hand, chatting away. It’s relaxed, unfussy and friendly.
And then there’s the food.
Given how close it is to L’Enclume, the Cavendish Arms Cartmel really holds its own. The plates are beautifully presented, the menus are seasonal, and you can tell real care goes into every dish. Everything feels thoughtfully sourced, locally led and cooked with confidence.

Some recent favourites (purely for research purposes, obviously):
- Cartmel Valley smoked salmon
- Halloumi chips (always a yes)
- Lamb shoulder with French fries and toasted sourdough
- The pies — especially when made with ale from Unsworth’s Yard
We’re also very weak when it comes to a Cartmel Cheeses board or finishing with sticky toffee pudding. When in Cartmel…
Drinks Worth Staying For
The drinks list is just as strong as the food. There’s an excellent gin selection (dangerous knowledge to have), brilliant fizz-based cocktails and, without fail, we always end up ordering the espresso martini.

You can pop in for a drink, or settle in for food – it works for both.
A Hidden Beer Garden by the River Eea
One of the things that really sets the Cavendish apart – and something many people don’t expect – is the beer garden.
What was once just a car park has been completely transformed into a beautiful courtyard space. There’s a large timber pergola with heaters, cosy blankets and seating, making it just as inviting in winter as it is in summer.

The River Eea runs right alongside, so you get that gentle background sound of water, and as you walk into the courtyard you’re met with a gorgeous view of Cartmel Priory – it really is a moment.
In winter, there are twinkling lights and a proper snug feel. In summer, it’s all about sitting by the river under the trees with a drink in hand. It’s one of those spaces you’d happily plan an afternoon around.
Booking Tips (From Experience)
If you’re planning on eating, especially at weekends, bank holidays or during Cartmel race days, booking ahead is a very good idea. Drinks are often easier to squeeze in, but even then it can get busy – particularly on sunny afternoons or race weekends.
We’ll admit it: we’re notorious for trying our luck last minute. The staff always do their best to help and fit people in where they can.
Why We Love It
The Cavendish Arms is one of those places that does a lot of things really well without making a fuss about it. It’s welcoming, characterful and feels like a true part of Cartmel – not just somewhere to eat good food, but somewhere to spend some time.
If you’re staying with us at The Pheasant Lodge, you’re only a few minutes’ drive. It’s absolutely worth seeking out. Whether for a cosy winter supper by the fire or a long, lazy drink by the river on a summer’s evening.
Let us know if you try it and want you think in the comments.
