When people think of a Lake District holiday, they often picture mountains, lakes and countryside walks.
And while those things are every bit as beautiful, there’s another side of Cumbria to discover too.
The county’s coastline is filled with seaside towns, wildlife, history and incredible views, and new plans for the Cumbria Coastal Route are set to shine even more of a spotlight on this beautiful part of the region.
At The Pheasant Lodge, this is one of the reasons we love our location in the South Lakes. Guests can spend one day exploring Cartmel and the surrounding countryside and lakes, then another discovering beaches, coastal walks and places they may never have thought to visit.
Here are five Cumbria coast day trips to add to your next stay.
1. Grange-over-Sands
Just a short drive from The Pheasant Lodge, Grange-over-Sands is one of the easiest ways to enjoy the Cumbrian coast.
Overlooking Morecambe Bay, this traditional Edwardian seaside town is perfect for a slower day out.
Walk along the promenade, enjoy the ornamental gardens or see the famous old lido. You can also browse independent shops or stop for coffee and cake in one of the many traditional tea rooms.
It’s ideal for those days when you want gorgeous scenery without a big hike.

2. Arnside and Silverdale
For coastal views, wildlife and peaceful walks, Arnside and Silverdale are well worth adding to your itinerary.
This beautiful area is known for its coastline, woodland walks and views across the Morecambe Bay.
Take a walk up Arnside Knott for one of the best viewpoints in the area, explore the village, grab the best fish and chips around, visit the independent shops or even stay for sunset.
It’s the perfect place to experience a quieter side of Cumbria.
3. Piel Island
For one of Cumbria’s most unique coastal adventures, plan a trip to Piel Island. This has to be one of our favourite days out.
Located just off the Furness Peninsula, this tiny island is full of history. It also feels like a real escape from everyday life. Explore the ruins of Piel Castle, enjoy a drink at The Ship Inn (the only pub on the island) and discover a completely different side of Cumbria’s coastline. You may even meet the King (IYKYK).
Reached by ferry during the warmer months, it’s the perfect choice for anyone looking for a memorable day out and a little adventure during their Lake District stay.

4. Walney Island
If you want somewhere completely different, head to Walney Island.
Just off the coast near Barrow-in-Furness, Walney is home to wide beaches, nature reserves and fantastic wildlife – including the resident seals. If you visit at the right time of year, you may even spot the pups!
It’s a place for quiet walks, sea views and a huge open coastline, offering a completely different side of Cumbria away from the busier visitor spots.

5. Roanhead Beach
For beautiful beaches and wide open views, Roanhead Beach is one of Cumbria’s hidden gems.
Backed by sand dunes and surrounded by nature, it’s a peaceful spot for a coastal walk, a picnic or simply enjoying a completely different side of the Lake District.
On a clear day, you can enjoy incredible views across the coastline and towards the surrounding fells, making it the perfect reminder that a trip to Cumbria doesn’t have to be just about lakes and mountains.
It’s a brilliant choice for anyone wanting sea air, open space and somewhere a little unexpected during their stay.
A new spotlight on the Cumbrian coast
The Cumbrian coast is also set to receive more attention over the coming years, with plans underway for the new Cumbria Coastal Route.
The project aims to celebrate the county’s coastal communities, landscapes and heritage, encouraging visitors to explore more of the incredible places found beyond the traditional Lake District hotspots.
It’s something we’re excited to see develop, especially as so many beautiful coastal spots are already within easy reach of the South Lakes.
