Lake District Half Term Guide: The Best Things to Do with Kids

Looking for things to do in the Lake District this half term? Whether you’re visiting with toddlers, school-age children or teens, the Lakes offers a mix of outdoor adventures, creative activities and family-friendly attractions.

Half term is one of the best times to explore the Lake District with children. The crowds are lighter than summer, the scenery is just as beautiful, and there’s always a surprising amount happening for families. Here are some of the best half-term activities in the Lake District, from scenic train rides and woodland trails to museums and arts and crafts.

Creative & Cultural Lake District Half Term Activities

Hertitage Houses for Half Term

Abbot Hall Art Gallery, Kendal

Abbot Hall is brilliant for a slower-paced, creative morning. Their February half-term sessions include hands-on crafts and activities inspired by Simon Starling: Boat Works exhibition. Wednesday – Saturday 10-4pm. There is also a painting blocks workshop to add colour to the creative space, a Concertina Crafts self-led activity and an Exhibition Art Trail where children are encouraged to find clues around the gallery.

It’s relaxed, welcoming and a nice option if you want something calm and creative – especially on a rainy day.

Blackwell The Arts & Crafts House, Bowness

Blackwell is one of the most beautiful houses in the Lakes and surprisingly it works for kids too. Their half-term activities often blend creativity, design and nature.

It doesn’t feel like a typical museum visit – more like exploring a fascinating house with the most beautiful views of Lake Windermere. This half term kids can can join in the family friendly activities inspired by the house itself and Frances Priest. You can make your own origami bird (Saturday 14 February and Monday–Saturday, 10am–4pm) or a tissue stained glass window (11am – 3:45pm on Thursday 19 February).

Perfect if you’re an adult who wants a bit of culture but also something for the young ones. We’ve enjoyed getting stuck in at the art room many times before.

Family-Friendly Musuems

Windermere Jetty Museum

If you have boat-loving or transport-curious kids, this one is a winner. And I always speak so highly about the space here and the position of the museum. Windermere Jetty mixes history with interactive displays and family-friendly exhibitions.

Half term brings hands-on family fun inspired by boats, sailing and life on the lake. You can build a boat with Makedo Tools or learn knot tying skills that the sailing teams use everyday.

Available between 11am – 3pm, Tuesday 17 – Saturday 21 February in the Learning Centre.

Note: Lakeland Arts own Abbot Hall, Blackwell and Windermere Jetty Museum – so activities run across all three and are shared across the Lakeland Arts website.

World of Beatrix Potter Attraction, Bowness

Always a favourite for younger children, especially during Lake District half term. We love the sound of the ‘Breakfast with Peter Rabbit’ which is on daily from 14-21 Feb at 9am. Something for early movers! Children will get the chance to meet the famous bunny and enjoy a tasty breakfast buffet. A magical one hour experience which includes tickets to the museum after.

If you’re looking for more crafts, there are Valentines Crafts on the 14th Feb at a drop in session. You can also check out the Jeremy Fisher garden trail – a free activity with your entry ticket. Plus, there is a theatrical performance of The Wind in the Willows featuring puppets, songs and audience engagement. A great choice for mixed weather days and little ones who love stories.

For Kids who need to move

Kendal Climbing Centre

For an energetic indoor option, Kendal Climbing Centre is a fantastic half-term pick. They’re running 15% off during half term, making it a great value day out if the weather turns or you’ve got active kids to entertain. Their Crazy Climbing sessions are especially popular with families, featuring colourful, fun climbing challenges that feel more like an adventure than a lesson.

Brave visitors can also try the Sky Jump, a thrilling leap from height that older kids and teens absolutely love. It’s a brilliant way to burn off some energy and try something different during a Lake District stay.

Outdoor Lake District Half Term Adventures

Grizedale Forest

Grizedale really comes alive in half term and is perfect for burning off energy. You can find:

• Gruffalo themed trails
• Bike hire from Biketreks
• Treetop adventures at Go Ape
• Planetarium and Observatory sessions

It’s one of those places where you can easily spend a whole day. Plus the adventure playgrounds are always popular with our kids.

Brockhole on Windermere

Brockhole is a go-to for families thanks to its huge outdoor space, free adventure playground and lakeside setting. BUT please note, Brockhole is currently being leased to a new operator, therefore not all activities are available.

Go Wild in the Woodlands

Leighton Hall Gardens and Woodland Walk

Leighton Hall’s gardens and woodland walks are a wonderful half-term choice for families who enjoy open spaces with lots of freedom for their kids. Wander through ornamental gardens, follow well-marked woodland paths, check out the bug hotels and bee corner or the caterpillar maze. The tree face trail is fun and let’s kids have a go at brass rubbings – crayon and paper provided in the activity pack. t’s a lovely way to soak up fresh air without steep walks – perfect if you want something peaceful and scenic. And yes, they have an adventure playground too!

Sizergh Castle and Gardens

Kids will especially enjoy the Wild Play Trail at Sizergh Castle. The fun outdoor trail takes you through ancient woodland and fields around the estate, where the ropes, swings, bridges, tunnels and games make it a fun and active way to spend a morning or afternoon. Combine a wander through the gardens with a stop at the café for some treats and you’ve got a relaxed, all-weather half-term day out in the Lakes.

I always feel like the National Trust know how to look after families and you’ll often find balance bikes, scooters, wellies, hats, scarves and more that you can borrow. A really lovely touch.

Why Half Term is a Lovely Time to Visit the Lake District

Lake District half term breaks have a different feel to summer holidays. I love it for the cosy mix of outdoor exploring followed by café stops or fireside evenings. When you go out, even if it’s wet and everyone comes back smiling with tired legs.

It’s a chance to do easy activities, wander, explore and enjoy some family time in one of the UK’s most beautiful places.

Events can change – so it’s always worth checking the venues’ website before visiting and check costs too. I’ve tried to list a few freebies but some you will need to pay for. Hopefully this list helps you pick the best ones for your family.

One thing’s for sure – there’s no shortage of family-friendly things to do in the Lakes during half term. If you’re looking for some simple walks – check these out too. Also I think you’ll enjoy the Claife viewing station walk on the West Side of Windermere, plus Gummers How is always an easy one with big views.
