Things to do in Grange-over-Sands. A relaxed Victorian Seaside Town with promenade walks, independent shops and a slower pace.
Grange-over-Sands often sits quietly in the shadow of its more famous neighbour, Cartmel. We love Cartmel and always will. But if you’re staying nearby and want a relaxed seaside town with a slower pace and plenty to explore, Grange-over-Sands is well worth your time.

This pretty Victorian seaside town sits right on the edge of Morecambe Bay and has a charm all of its own. Think views of the sea, independent shops, award winning food choices and an easy, unhurried feel that makes it a joy to wander around.
Grange-over-Sands is a local gem
Grange is full of lovely independent shops and practical stops that make it especially handy for holidaymakers and locals alike. There are small supermarkets, Higginsons – an award-winning butcher and plenty of places to pick up good quality local produce for your stay. It’s the sort of town where you can arrive needing just a couple of things and leave with far more than planned.

You’ll also find lots of welcoming cafés, coffee shops and traditional tea rooms, perfect for a slow morning or a mid-afternoon stop. One of my favourite places to browse is the vintage emporium on the high street, which is absolutely packed with second-hand treasures. It’s one of those places where you really need time, because every corner has something different to discover.
There is also a great choice of gift shops, with homeware, clothing, jewellery and much more. You’ll notice Pheasant Lodge has keepsakes from Grange-over-Sands dotted around if you stay.
The Promenade: The Real Star of Grange-over-Sands
For me and my family, the real highlight of Grange-over-Sands is the promenade. It’s one of the most beautiful flat coastal walks in the area, accessible and ideal for all ages. You can start right by the train station at one end of Grange and stroll along the coast. You’ll see the wide open views across Morecambe Bay and the hills rising behind you.
The gardens along the promenade are always beautifully maintained and change with the seasons. Keep walking and you’ll reach the playground, which has some of the best views you could hope for while your kids play. There are classic seaside coffee spots along the way too, serving ice creams and drinks. Meaning you can take your time and make the most of the day.

At the far end of the promenade, you’ll spot Grange Lido. No longer a working Lido, it has recently been transformed and is due to reopen soon. You can already peek through to see how it’s coming along. It’s going to be a fantastic space for meet ups, families and friends and I’ll be sharing more once it officially opens.
Beyond that, there’s a skate park and even more open space for children to run around. When the tide is out, you can walk along the grassy shoreline and sand, just be mindful as the tides here can turn quickly.
A Perfect Slow Sunny Walk
Grange-over-Sands really comes into its own on a sunny day. It’s calm, spacious and unhurried. We often bring scooters and bikes, and the children whizz along the promenade while we walk behind them.
Driving into Grange is also a moment in itself. You come down a steep hill and suddenly the sea opens out in front of you. It still makes me pause for a moment to take it all in.
Why It’s Worth Adding to Your Itinerary
Cartmel may be known for its food and race days, but Grange-over-Sands is its seaside sister. It’s ideal for stocking up on holiday supplies, stretching your legs by the coast, or spending a gentle afternoon somewhere a little less busy.
If you’re staying at The Pheasant Lodge, Grange-over-Sands is just a short drive away and makes an easy and lovely addition to your stay. It’s the perfect balance to days spent exploring the Lakes, with space, sea air and a wonderfully relaxed pace.
