All within a few miles of your stay at the Pheasant Lodge.
Did you know the Lake District has the most Michelin star restaurants in the UK outside London? No small feat! Known as the culinary hub of the North West, the South Lakes boasts three exceptional dining experiences – all within two miles of The Pheasant Lodge.
So, if you’re looking for something with a little spectacle and a lot of flavour, you’re in the right place.

A Michelin Star is an esteemed rating awarded by the Michelin Guide for outstanding cooking. One star denotes a very good restaurant, two stars means excellent cooking, and three stars signifies exceptional cuisine – worth a special journey. I love that bit and it’s why I’m so proud to live where we do.
Below are three restaurants in the South Lake District, close to the Pheasant Lodge – each one truly worth that special journey.
L’Enclume – Cartmel Village
The first restaurant outside London to achieve three Michelin stars. L’Enclume is one of the Lake District’s greatest treasures. Guests travel from across the country to experience Simon Rogan’s world-renowned cooking.

Set in a beautiful old blacksmith’s workshop beside the River Eea in Cartmel, it’s just a few minutes’ drive from The Pheasant Lodge. L’Enclume is built around a philosophy of growing and sourcing locally. Most of what appears on the plate comes from Rogan’s own farm in the Cartmel Valley, where vegetables, herbs and edible flowers are cultivated especially for his kitchen.
Each dish is creative, seasonal and beautifully presented – a reflection of the surrounding landscape. Dining here feels more like an experience than a meal. It’s artful, inspiring and deeply connected to the Lake District.
If you’re celebrating a special occasion during your stay, L’Enclume is one you’ll never forget. Just be sure to book well in advance – tables fill quickly. £££
Rogan & Co – Cartmel Village
Just around the corner from L’Enclume, Rogan & Co is Simon Rogan’s relaxed neighbourhood restaurant and it’s every bit as special in its own way. Awarded one Michelin star, it offers all the finesse you’d expect, but in a more laid-back, cosy setting, close to Cartmel Priory.

Here, you’ll find seasonal dishes built around the same ethos as L’Enclume, using ingredients grown on Rogan’s nearby farm in the Cartmel Valley. The menu changes regularly but always celebrates the best of local produce – from freshly caught fish from Morecambe Bay to garden-picked herbs and vegetables.
Rogan & Co feels warm and welcoming, with open fires and friendly service. It’s ideal for a long lunch or relaxed evening meal without the formality of fine dining. Book ahead, especially at weekends but look at for offers or tasting menus which are always better value. ££
Heft – High Newton
A 5-minute drive in the other direction, in the small village of High Newton, you’ll find Heft. Heft is a beautifully restored 17th-century inn run by chef Kevin Tickle and his wife Nicola. Recently awarded its first Michelin star, Heft has quickly become one of the most talked-about restaurants in the Lake District.

The cooking here is contemporary yet deeply rooted in Cumbria’s landscape. Expect inventive, flavour-packed dishes made with local game, foraged herbs, and seasonal vegetables – all served in a setting that feels both rustic and refined. We’d recommend trying the Sunday roasts because they are epic and don’t skimp on any sides.
The stone walls of the old pub at the front and log fires create a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere. Heft perfectly captures what modern Cumbrian dining is all about – creativity, warmth and a food from the landscape around. It’s well worth booking a table while you’re staying with us. £££
(If you’d like to check out Heft, without the full dining experience, they run different food nights throughout the month and have bar food available too. We often head along to order the Pizzas from Charred or enjoy their Fish and Chip night.) Follow Heft on social media for updates.

Some things to remember with our favourite Lake District Michelin Star Restaurants:
Book ahead
These are three of the best restaurants in the country, so tables get snapped up fast. If you’re visiting for a special occasion or over a busy weekend (Bank Holidays especially), it’s worth booking well in advance to avoid disappointment.
What to wear
Although these Lake District Michelin Star restaurants feel like a luxurious treat – each one has a warm, friendly atmosphere. Most diners opt for smart-casual – think jeans, a nice top, or smart trainers. Some guests like to dress up a little more, and that’s very welcome too.
Cost per head
Expect to spend anywhere from £100 per person (without drinks) up to £300 or more, depending on your menu and wine choices. Lunchtime or tasting menus often offer great value – perfect if you’d like to sample the experience without going all out.
Where to stay
What a trio! Many of our guests at The Pheasant Lodge have enjoyed the culinary delights these Lake District Michelin Star restaurants. We’re perfectly placed right between all three, so you’re truly spoilt for choice.
It’s the ideal spot to come home to afterwards too – loosen your belt, pour a drink, and relax by the fire. Plus, we sleep six, so you can all share your foodie reviews together in the cosy lounge. You can check availability dates here.
