From pub classics to wood-fired pizza and Sunday roasts, these are the restaurants we return to time and time again – proof that great food doesn’t need a star.
We all know the Lake District is crammed with Michelin star magic, in fact there seems to be newly awarded restaurant popping up around every lake corner. But what if you want something just as delicious, without the price tag or formality? Maybe even somewhere you can walk straight into after a long walk – no booking required?
Here in and around Cartmel, we’re spoiled for choice. The South Lakes is full of restaurants, pubs and cafés serving food that’s every bit as memorable – you just need to know where to look.
We’ve rounded up a few of our favourite local spots – places we love for their mouth-watering meals, even if the big chubby tyre guy hasn’t given them a star.
Here are 5 South Lakes favourites I think you’ll love. Let’s get stuck in.
The Cavendish Arms Cartmel – A South Lakes Favourite
Always top of my list. The Cavendish is only a stones throw from L’Enclume but shares much of the class and attention to detail. Their menu changes regularly to make the most of seasonal produce, with dishes like Cartmel Valley smoked salmon and their much-loved Cavendish steak and Unsworth’s ale pie.

The atmosphere is laid back and welcoming, you can either sit on the restaurant side with a slightly more formal feel or on the pub side. Here you’ll find a roaring fire throughout the year, low beams and hops hung from the ceiling. Their huge selection of gin is worth exploring and the killer cocktails too.
You’d expect a meal here to be around £35-£50 per person, no drinks included and it’s absolutely worth it.
Harry’s Bar Yew Tree Barn – Low Newton
Part café, part deli, part treasure trove – Harry’s is one of those places you visit for lunch and somehow end up spending the whole afternoon. The food is outstanding: generous sandwiches, wholesome soups, seasonal specials and brilliant cakes.
It’s relaxed, warm and full of character, ideal for brunch, lunch or just a shopping refuel. Make sure you wander the antiques barn or browse the homeware shop next door.
Expect to spend around £10–£20 per person.
The Swan at Newby Bridge
If you follow us on Instagram – you’ll know we’re always popping into The Swan.
Just a short drive from The Pheasant Lodge towards the lake, The Swan is a homely and stylish riverside pub and spa with a bright, modern dining room and a classic menu. It’s brilliant for families, groups or anyone wanting good food in a relaxed setting.

Think steak sandwiches, pies and seasonal salads, combined with comforting classics – all served in a friendly, unfussy way. The outdoor terrace overlooking the river is perfect on sunny days, and the pizza van is always a hit.
Expect to spend around £20–£35 per person without drinks.
Levens Kitchen – Levens
You wouldn’t expect a restaurant at a Historic House to have such a good menu but it’s 100% worth the visit. Sadly, it’s only open from 9.30-4.30pm, so not an evening affair but somewhere lovely to meet friends for a special, leisurely lunch. As with many of my favourite picks, they serve the best local ingredients with a seasonally inspired menu. They even use products grown on their own estate and gardens.

So within a few hundreds metres – they’ll be on your plate. We love the sourdough pizzas – particularly the chestnut mushroom, squash, sage and stilton and the long horn Smash Burger for something meatier. There is also a bakery on site with freshly baked bread, pastries and cakes.
You’ll pay between £15 and £30 per person.
Oscar’s at Unsworths Yard – Cartmel
Tucked inside Unsworth’s Yard, Oscar’s is a stylish little wine bar and restaurant serving fresh, flavour-packed dishes in a relaxed setting with views over Cartmel Priory. It’s perfect for sharing plates from around the globe with an outstanding selection of wines and cocktails to enjoy with your meal. You’ll also find the brewery on site, plus the cheese shop and bakery – making it a brilliant spot to graze, sip and enjoy a few hours. The courtyard feels especially lovely in summer with live music and a fun atmosphere.
Expect to spend around £15–£30 per person depending on how many plates you order.
The Pig & Whistle – Cartmel – Classic South Lakes Comfort Food
Currently under re-construction, opening afresh in Christmas 2025 but one to watch!
The Pig & Whistle is a characterful pub with bags of warmth and some of the best pub food around. It has that “local’s favourite” feel – wooden beams, friendly staff and a great outdoor area. The new owners are really putting some love into it and developing the inside and out – so we’re excited to see the new look.

The menu is hearty and delicious, from crispy fish and chips to excellent pies and daily specials that showcase local produce. Portions are generous, the welcome is always warm and it’s the kind of place where you instantly relax.
Expect to spend around £25–£40 per person, not including drinks.
Heft – More Than Just a Michelin Star
OK, we know we’ve already raved about Heft in our Michelin-star guide (worth a read if you missed it), but it deserves another shout-out here too. While the restaurant side is all about sleek, exceptional dining, the front of the pub has a completely different personality – laid-back, cosy and full of village atmosphere.

Throughout the year they host brilliant pop-up food nights where different chefs and local companies take over the kitchen. You might find Charred Pizzas served from the pizza van out front, a fish-and-chip night, or a hearty curry night that fills the whole pub with incredible smells. It’s the perfect place for relaxed, delicious food without any formality, and it’s a favourite with locals for good reason.
Prices vary depending on the menu.
