We visited Sizergh Castle’s Winter Lights and had to go around twice.
If you’re looking for the perfect festive day or evening out, that will leave you with a little glow inside – you need to add Sizergh Castle Winter lights to your Christmas schedule. Perfect for friends, families or really anyone who wants a festive outing that feels special without being hectic.

Sizergh Castle Winter Lights
We timed our visit just as the light was starting to fade, which made everything feel even more atmospheric. The castle was glowing. Christmas trees twinkled outside the entrance and the whole place had that warm, festive buzz you only get in December. Ok, so the end of November. But that’s ok right? Nothing wrong with starting the party early, especially when there is so much to do in the Lake District.
We did our first (yes, we did it twice) walk around the knoll at around 4pm. That meant we could take all the shining animals in, listen to the forest sounds and be completely on our own. What’s wonderful is the animals are designed by local artists and school groups. The knoll is where you’ll find the gorgeous woodland walk with light display. Although there are lots of other lights around the grounds.

Then we stopped at the Craft Barn, which was brilliant for kids and adults alike. You can make your own antlers, build mini castles, decorate Christmas ornaments and generally get stuck into all things festive. It’s relaxed, creative and a lovely warm-up before we headed out again on the Sizergh Winter light trail.
This time the light had fully disappeared and going back a second time in the dark was absolutely worth it. We spotted so many more details. There were animations dancing across the trees, flying birds swooping above, lantern owls glowing and robins and beautiful light projections on the castle walls.

I don’t want to give too much away, but there are a few moments on the walk that genuinely make you stop in your tracks. So take your time and let your eyes adjust. You’ll see something different every few steps.
Parking and Costs
The event itself is really affordable. Children under 5 are free and there are big discounts if you’re a National Trust member. Parking is simple too. There’s a large car park and again, if you’re lucky enough to be a National Trust member, it’s free, with a small fee for everyone else.
Praise for the National Trust
One thing I really noticed and think it’s definitely worth talking about is how thoughtful, welcoming and inspiring the team at Sizergh and the National Trust were. There was an entire area filled with spare wellies, boots, gloves, hats and even ear defenders for anyone who needed them.
They genuinely want everyone to enjoy the night, whatever the weather, no fuss. Staff went above and beyond to help (especially appreciated as I was there with my two small children on my own). Even the toilets had nappies and sanitary products ready for anyone who needed them. It’s such a small thing, but it makes a huge difference and definitely makes me think what else I could offer to my guests at the Pheasant Lodge.
The trail itself is easy, accessible and ideal for all ages. The paths are mostly wood chip and suitable for wheelchairs and buggies. The loop isn’t long, which is perfect for younger children or tired legs. Even with a bit of drizzle, it didn’t dampen the evening – if anything, the lights looked even prettier reflecting off the puddles.
Book your trip to the Sizergh Castle Winter Lights
Top tip: book your tickets in advance. It’s popular – and for good reason – so dates will fill up quickly. You can also look inside the house if you have time, which has been beautifully decorated for Christmas. Plus make sure you nip into the cafe and gift shop for a whole world of treats. You’ll find loads of great Christmas ideas.
If you’re looking for something festive, magical and family-friendly this winter, the Sizergh Castle Winter Lights are definitely worth a visit. Go at dusk, take it slowly and enjoy watching the trail come alive as the sky gets darker. It’s a lovely way to start the season.
The Pheasant Lodge is close by, so if you’re looking for somewhere to stay – do get in touch.
